Being a DVM “Mum”

Meet Charlotte Dawson, RCVS (DVM), Medical Director of Innovetive Petcare’s Chisholm Trail Veterinary Clinic-New Braunfels.

Being a DVM mom, or “mum” as she says, to her family, team and patients is one of her most fulfilling job titles.

With demands as a mother at home and work, Dr. Dawson is often asked how success is possible.

“Simply measure your time appropriately and you can be successful. Show your family you love and care about them but carry those exact same values into your work day and you will help clients and your team feel their importance with your dedicated time too,” says Dr. Dawson as advice to those interested in the veterinary field.

Like motherhood feels to some individuals, Dr. Dawson has always yearned to be a veterinarian.

Dr. Dawson grew up near the USAF bases and Cambridge University in England and often volunteered at local veterinary clinics. In 2009, she chose the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) as her future alma mater and studied bio-veterinary science in London to accomplish her dream. After graduating with her degree and meeting her future husband, she returned to RVC to complete her degree in veterinary medicine and was inducted into the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2017.

Throughout her years of veterinary school, Dr. Dawson worked for the London Zoo and several working animal farms across Europe. Her experience fueled her passion to further a large animal focus and find more ways to connect with animals and their owners. She began a career as a mixed practice relief veterinary surgeon with across England. In 2019, her husband retired from the Air Force and decided Texas was their future home. She settled in New Braunfels to join the Chisholm Trail Veterinary Clinic team in 2019.

What’s the best part of your day as a DVM “mum?”

“Being able to bring solutions to navigate through life’s journey with a sense of peace. Whether this is through medicine, healing animals, assisting team members in bettering themselves at work, or teaching my family how to develop their thoughts in our world.”

How is your role at the clinic and at home alike? Different?

“As a leader, I am continually looked upon both at work and at home. At work, I choose to portray positive energy and instill positive thoughts. I believe in inclusion and creating an environment of inspiration and collaboration. At home, I am much more direct towards running a successful household…and keeping the kids and my husband on their toes!”

In conclusion, Dr. Dawson is also a pet “mum.” She has a rescue pointer/hound named Reeka, a chihuahua called Sami, and two Sphynx cats named Midnight and Madame. She shares her life with her husband, Chris, and four children, Jordan, Christopher, Charity, and Lexi. Dr. Dawson enjoys a lovely cup of tea, being a foodie, weight lifting, hiking, and spending time with her family.
